LBC launched on October 8th 1973 with Capital following 8 days later. Initial reaction to their arrival was not good with some politicians wanting for instance "to put LBC out of its misery" but on the very last day of the year Radio Clyde launched in Glasgow and was an instant success; Commercial Radio was up and running. Very quickly LBC and Capital were revamped and the impact of commercially funded radio spread across the whole of the UK.

1973 begon iets waar de Britse zeezenders zo "voor gestreden" hadden, onzin natuurlijk, de zz was het daar niet echt om te doen.

Er ontwikkelde zich in de lange loop der jaren een keten van veelal onafhankelikke commerciele radiostations in the UK met veelal ook een eigen geluid passend bij het uitzendgebied. Hedentendage is dat verleden tijd en is "locale" commerciele radio in the UK in handen van enkele grote groepen en is het locale karakter volledig verdwenen. Ik ga het beluisteren.

Ik wist dat het programma over "40 jaar commerciële radio in Groot Brittannië" zou komen. Dat was in in een Engelse nieuwsgroep aangekondigd.

Er was natuurlijk al flinke discussie over, hoezo 40 jaar .. "and what about Caroline ?" en moet dat nu op de BBC uitgezonden worden ?

Dus was ik heel benieuwd... Het programma zou om 22.00u Engelse tijd ( en 23.00u Nederlandse tijd) beginnen. Ongeveer een half uur daarvoor hoorde ik dat Nelson Mandela was overleden. Dat was op alle mogelijke media te horen, te zien en te lezen. Ik was ook benieuwd hoe de BBC het zou brengen. Omdat ik het programma over commerciële radio ook wilde horen ( en opnemen) zette ik mijn tuner op BBC Radio 2. En toen hoorde ik Labi Siffre met het geweldige Something inside so strong. Een minuut of 5 later hoorde ik het nog en toen was ik benieuwd of de programmering nog verder zou worden aangepast op de muziekzender. Labi Siffre's song werd tot het nieuws van 22.00u gedraaid en na het nieuws volgde toch dat programma dat ik wilde volgen... Dus heb ik het begin gehoord en ik wilde op tijd gaan slapen en ik had de md recorder al aangezet.

Dat bedoelde ik Ik vond het heel apart om de song over innerlijke sterkte zo te horen.

Part Two examines the impact commercial radio has had on the UK's broadcasting environment; its role as a training ground for talent new to the medium, its introduction of new styles and techniques as well as its impact on the BBC.

Among the contributors in this series are John Whitney, Capital's first MD who later rose to be Director General of the IBA, John Thompson, the regulator's first Director of Radio, Marshall Stewart, the former 'Today' Editor drafted in to rescue LBC, as well as David Symonds the first deejay to be heard on Capital. As Torin Douglas, the former BBC Media Editor says: "Commercial Radio has influenced radio all through the last 40 years...right from the start its been driving the BBC which always responds to competition - the BBC raised its game".
