Geplaatst 4 april 20187 jr. Does anyone have any recordings of the VoP from 1973, it's first year of broadcasting?? The only thing I have heard is the opening with Abie Nathan, but does anyone have a recording of a music programme? Tony Allan was on board at the time along with a couple of other English speaking dj's. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Ian
Geplaatst 5 april 20187 jr. My VoP recordings start from 1975, apart from also the above mentioned openingsprogramme in 1973. Have also never seen earlier programma's.
Geplaatst 5 april 20187 jr. Could it be that the VOP was off the air early 74 because of the rumours that radio Benelux would use the ship on the northsea?

Most programmes broadcast in English but a few programmes broadcast in French, Hebrew and Arabic. The station soon became very popular with the younger generation of Israel and Lebanon. The main aim of the station was to promote peace in the Middle East, little advertising was broadcast, but propaganda was broadcast in support of Israeli industry. During the October war the ship moved to the Suez Canal, while the soldiers listened to the station, they only laughed at requests to lay down their arms. 5th October. An Israeli gunboat ordered the Voice of Peace to close down, on the outbreak of the Middle East War. Later the station resumed broadcasting, but off the coast of Famagusta, Cyprus. 4th November. An argument with advertisers lead to support being withdrawn, and the station was forced to close. The ship docked at Ashdod, Abie promising to return to the air when more funds are made available. Abie was unsuccessful, the ship returned to Marseilles broadcasting appeals for money as she sailed. 25th December. The Peace anchored off Italy. 1974. The Peace arrived in Marseilles at the beginning of the New Year, rumours circulated that the ship was for sale, but these turned out to be false, just waiting for new backers. groet, Hans
Geplaatst 6 april 20187 jr. Auteur Hi Hans, Thank you for the information and the recordings. For the record, the Dave Collins recording is from 1977. I know Dave from years ago and he was not on the ship in 1973. Thanks Ian
