I have a feeling that 1430-1633 the date is Friday 14th September 1990. Also 1430-1600 is Rico, going by Jan-Fre's Index. Ricky Jones begins at 1600. Comments?

Yes John you are quite correct. This when Caroline had restarted transmissions  on the 10th of September at 18.00 and closed daily at 06.00. Rico and Ricky Jones were the only two presenters on board. The DTI were not pleased with Caroline being on 558 again. The visit from the Landward (hence the early start that day)was a warning shot to Caroline and on the 16th the final broadcasts on 558 took part.

Dear Dale,

I was wondering if the 2nd & 3rd recordings could be from 15th September and the 4th from 16th September (final day on 558kHz). Comments? Probably not, since I never heard any talk of the temporary shut-down of 16th September.

Good afternoon John

i have had some time today, so I have found some tapes of the last night on 558 on the 16th and recordings 2 3 &4 are not from that evening where transmissions finished at midnight. Also they are not from the 14th as I have most of this evening on tape. So your thoughts on the 15th is a good bet. I am sure that I have some more tapes from this week and will have a look for them when time permits.

I have solved one mystery John, the 3rd recording is from the 12th of September and the time is incorrect. It should be 18.00-20.11. I have a tape of part of this one.

The last recording is from 13th of September and the time is correct. I have a recording of part of this as well. So only the second one to identify. I can tell it is not from the 10th, 11th, 12th, 14th or 16th

I do remember that week with Caroline only on the air in the evenings because of the other transmitter on 558 in London. 

As I understand it (corrections welcome):

 

Caroline was off the air since Spectrum Radio's launch day in June 1990 (with the exception of a couple of short tests in July and the "remember the raid" programme in August) since the management apparently did not want to upset the DTI.

 

Radio Caroline went back on the air over-night in September as Mike Dundee (Peter Moore's second-in-command) had agreed to it. He had visited the ship and the DJs begged him to allow it as they were getting incredibly depressed at being silenced.

 

It seemed reasonable to Mike as the generator was on at night to power the lights so it wouldn't cost anything extra in terms of diesel. Besides, Spectrum was also transmitting on 990 kHz and were barely promoting 558 kHz, so it was unlikely to cause any bother.

 

After the whole Landward visit, Peter Moore was displeased with the attention from the DTI, so he ordered the transmitter switched off again... until the Ross was equipped with a crystal for 819 kHz, of course.
