I get the impression that everyone hoarded this recording, but no-one listened to it!

Between about 2m25s and 18m45s is not Viewpoint, it's a Radio 819 studio recording.

Probably one of the 819 DJs wanted to keep a copy of the broadcast for posterity and just picked up one of the "used" tapes that was nearby. (I would be interested to learn details of what happened to the tape afterwards...).

No, it’s not from 01-01-1989. The cassette was used on board for the broadcast of ‘The Word Of Today Of Calvary Chapel’ on 24-01-1989 and was later reused on board to record a live program. I must admit: I listened to the beginning and end, so I ‘missed’ this one.

There’s still a box full of these kinds of cassettes waiting to be digitized.

Op de opname van 16 minuten hoor je Walter Simons die 'live aan boord' op een zaterdagavond tussen 2300 en 2400 uur het programma The Party presenteert. Op de achtergrond hoor je af en toe de rest van de boordploeg. De juiste tijd wordt niet genoemd, maar duidelijk is dat het programma het einde nadert richting middernacht.

Ik ga er vanuit dat de tape, zoals Vincent meldt, in eerste instantie is gebruikt voor uitzending op dinsdagavond 24 januari 1989 van het programma 'The word for today' gepresenteerd door pastor Chuck. Zie voor meer informatie en juiste naam ook: https://www.pastorchuck.org/

Walter Simons zat, volgens mijn gegevens, aan boord vanaf vrijdag 27 januari 1989 tot zondag 12 februari 1989. Hierna is hij afgelost en keerde op dinsdag 18 april 1989 weer terug.

Hoewel het een aanname is, blijft het aannemelijk dat Walter de originele tape heeft overschreven voor een boordopname op zaterdag: 28 januari óf 4 februari óf 11 februari 1989. Het gebruik van de tape ná 18 april 1989 kan natuurlijk niet worden uitgesloten, maar ligt minder voor de hand.

I've checked "Radio 819 the Complete Story" by Hans Knot (Monitor no. 38)

It is stated that Walter Simons was on board from Saturday 21st January 1989 to Saturday 4th March 1989.

I doubt this recording was Saturday 21st January because:

"During the live party between 2315 and 2400 with all the Dutch deejays, they constantly went on about how cold it was on board the ship due to the fact the heating system had broken down. So all day, they claimed, they'd all been presenting their shows in winter overcoats".

Perhaps 28th January or 4th February is more likely?

"On the 31st Walter Simons was celebrating his birthday; he was twenty-five today".

My Dutch is quite poor, but I understood that he was giving greetings to various people including his parents(?) and there seemed to be quite a bit of celebratory jubilation, so...?

Vincent has already reported that the original tape was used for broadcast on January 24th, 1989. Only after this date was the tape overwritten. The earliest possible Saturday after this is January 28th, 1989.

The recording does not mention the temperature in the studio and yes, greetings are given to friends. Walter is also reminded to give greetings to Mirjam (Verhoef) his girlfriend and later husband.

I hope you don't think I was doubting what was marked on the cassette.

However, at that time, I believe they were still transmitting religious tapes with "Viewpoint 963" announcements and jingles... which had therefore presumably been prepared at least 14 months prior.

Also, the Caroline DJs seemed to have a somewhat disdainful attitude to the radio priests, so much so that Hans Knot claims he got a letter from the American organisation:

"[...] which stated that they're very dissatisfied with the English guys who have to play the religious tapes. They asked us if the Dutch organisation could put someone on board, as they had heard the Dutch were more reliable than the English".

There was also the incident at Christmas 1988 where part of the Radio 1 chart show was broadcast instead of the correct taped Caroline 558 programme... the tape had been accidentally re-used before the scheduled date.

Anyway, 21st January is ruled out!
